the headline news out of brussels today was a very terse statement from the pentagon spokesman. it was kind of strange. he was essentially clarifying, hey, whatever you heard from the germans earlier today, that was not true. this is the statement. let's bring up the pentagon here and look at this. if this represented the entire budget of the pentagon, these cuts would only about this 8% or so up here at the top. that doesn't look like a whole lot right now, but the impact could be quite large. for example, one of the cuts would be to 46,000 department of defense jobs, which would be endangered with men and women and enlisted families, in fact, facing lower pay raises next year than they would expect. what about beyond that? the civilian population, working for the defense department. 800,000 civilians could face these 22-day furloughs, a forced furlough. it's a forced vacation. essentially, they're losing an entire month of pay out of the year, big impact on a lot of those folks out there. beyond that, there could be a reduction in training and maintenance for many people. that would have a bigger impact, probably in forward bases, where people are deployed, like afghanistan. beyond that, a reduction in naval operations. and finally, a reduction, in fact, in the number of hours
